The Cherokee County School District has again earned a top state honor for providing outstanding meals and service to students!
CCSD’s School Nutrition program, which serves 5 million meals each year in school cafeterias, won the Golden Radish Award from the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Division.
The award recognizes excellence in providing fresh, locally grown produce and ingredients in student meals; promoting the importance of farm to school food sourcing; and participating in school garden projects. Districts were evaluated on their work using criteria developed by the state School Nutrition Division, Georgia Department of Agriculture, University of Georgia Extension and Georgia Department of Public Health. CCSD is one of only 34 school districts in the state to earn the honor for the past two years of service.

We’re so proud of our School Nutrition team for ensuring our students receive the best meals and service possible, and this award recognizes their dedication,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “They are committed to continuous improvement, and we’ve seen so many positive changes -- from more locally sourced produce to more variety in our menus, with students taste-testing new options to give our team valuable feedback. Congratulations to our School Nutrition team and thank you for all you do!”
CCSD School Nutrition Executive Director Tina Farmer and Supervisor Toni Hedges accepted the award from Georgia Superintendent of Schools Richard Woods and other state leaders at a recent ceremony in Athens. As part of the honor, the department received a set of school kitchen equipment including a salad spinner, Sunkist Sectionizer fruit and vegetable slicer, fry cutter, mandoline slicer, various kitchen knives, cutting boards and an Innoseal bagging system. The Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize CCSD School Nutrition for this honor at the October School Board meeting.
