FOIA Request Sent to Johnson County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 29, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Johnson County Election Department in Georgia on October 29, 2024. The request, filed by Central Georgia News, seeks information about the methods used for counting votes in the upcoming election.

As a media organization dedicated to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Central Georgia News are particularly interested in understanding whether the vote count will be manual or automated. If manual counting is employed, we have requested an estimate of the number of people who will be working on election night.

The request was made under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq., and we have asked for the information to be provided in electronic format where possible.

As journalists, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.

We await a response from the Johnson County Election Department and will keep our readers updated with any developments.
