East Georgia College issued the following announcement on May 9.
East Georgia State College art students recently visited the SCAD Museum of Art and the Jepson Center in Savannah, Georgia. The drawing II course and the two-dimensional design course were chaperoned on the trip by Desmal Purcell, Professor of Art and Dr. Alan Brasher, Professor of English.
The SCAD Museum of Art was the first stop on the trip for the students. They received a tour led by SCAD Art History major Caeley Jones. On the tour the group saw the Icons Only exhibition, a group exhibition celebrating various icons. The exhibit traces phenomenon from the Golden Age of Hollywood to our current era of viral social media fame, contemplating the evolution of iconography and its modern embrace in popular media. Other exhibits the students had the chance to enjoy were Dark Silhouettes by artist Matthew Angelo, a powerful exhibition featuring African sculpture encased in resin; Soft Spot by artist Sang Hoon Kim, a sculptural exhibition featuring furniture made from various resin and foam sprays; Mirror Society by artist Norbert Bisky, a painting/mixed media exhibition exploring voyeurism and the inherit narcissism of today’s society; Pale in Comparison by artist Doreen Lynette Garner, featuring works that explore the history of violence implicit in racism and the trans-Atlantic slave trade; The Touch of Otherness by artist Hayv Kahraman, exploring the diasporic experience while celebrating her cultural identity and the impact of violent assimilative forces; Urban Requiem by artist Barthelemy Toguo, the exhibition addresses exile, colonialism and other issues plaguing the Global North and the South; Chill Sleeping by artist Katharina Gross, work relating to our connection to surface texture, color, and perspective; and Making the Birds Proud by artist Patrick Doughtery.
After the tour of the SCAD Museum, the students walked to Vinnie Van Gogo's pizzeria, a must-visit restaurant in Savannah. The group also popped into Savannah's Candy Kitchen next door to grab some sweet treats. The students dined on slices of pizza in Franklin Square before making their way to City Market. In City Market they stopped by the A. T. Hunn Gallery and the Kobo Gallery where they met the artist/painter Antoine de Villiers.
The Jepson Center for the Arts was next on the tour. The Jepson Center was designed by world renowned architect Moshe Safdie, which was a highlight in Professor Purcell's lecture courses. The students and professors had a chance to admire the exterior architecture of the building before heading inside to experience the space and view the work on display. At the Jepson, they took in the work of numerous regional artists including William Golding at the exhibit Hard Knocks, Hardships and Lots of Experience; the exhibition #art912 Concvergence featuring works from the permanent collection by regional artists; Chul-Hyun Ahn's exhibit Beyond (the students were most impressed with this exhibition exploring infinite space), the exhibit Beyond: Light, Color and Illusion (group exhibition); and Complex Uncertainties: Artists in Postwar America. The group was excited to see that the exhibit featured a work by Willie Tarver, a native of Wadley, Georgia. Seeing work by a local artist in a major museum was a highlight of the trip for some students.
After the Jepson the students walked down historic Broughton Street and stopped into Nerdheim, a comics and game shop, and the Coffee Fox for an afternoon cup of java.
The next stop of the tour for students was Blick Art Supplies. The group stocked up on art supplies for their upcoming exhibitions and projects. Throughout the day the classes made images for an upcoming exhibition at the EGSC Student Gallery. The students said this was one of the highlights of the trip for them along with hearing stories behind the works from a wide range of artists. For the students preparing to exhibit at the Kalmanson Gallery at the Emanuel Arts Council, seeing finalized exhibitions showed them what they should strive for.
Students who attended the trip were Maddux Bedgood, Odalyz Canseco-Sanchez, Dormeshia Elam, C.J. Gresham, Jadah Harrison, Ty Jackson, Amanda Lee, Viri Mejia, Ridge Turner, and Dixie Warren.
