Statewide, more than 1.7 million students enrolled in Georgia’s public schools, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools in the wake of the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, Georgia Department of Education reported. To address this, GaDOE began a statewide effort that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and targeted support for high-need districts to encourage daily attendance.
In 2025, Georgia lawmakers approved a bill updating attendance laws, prohibiting expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation also requires new reporting and works with programs that help students earn diplomas through alternatives.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, which is an improvement over the national average of 15:1.
