Enrollment was highest in elementary grades (787,206 students, or 45.9%), followed by middle school (388,733 students, or 22.7%) and high school (539,092 students, or 31.4%).
Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. GaDOE responded with a statewide initiative launching a real-time attendance dashboard, a public information campaign, and targeted support for districts with greater need.
In 2025, Georgia legislators updated attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for missing school. The law introduces new reporting mandates and better aligns with alternative diploma pathway programs.
As of 2026, Georgia had a student-to-teacher ratio of around 14:1, which is more favorable than the national average of 15:1.
