Four Carrollton High School students competed in the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association Second Year Debate State Championship Feb. 4 and brought home the first-place trophy.

CHS Debate Coach Richard Bracknell said GFCA features a state championship for second-year debaters, typically sophomores and some juniors, depending on when they started to debate. Representing the team were Audrey Browning, Kieran Kelly, Eden Long, and Luke Zimmer.

The Trojans debated at Marist School regarding the validity of right-to-work laws. Luke took the first place title in the speaker category, with Audrey, Eden, and Kieran second, third, and fourth speakers, respectively.

Along with senior Mark Zimmer, junior Andrew Johnson, and sophomores James Houser and Tee Hawkins, the group will be vying for the GFCA Varsity State Championship the first weekend of March at Sequoyah High School. If the Trojans win, it will be the third consecutive state championship win for CHS debate.

The debate program has the second-most state championships in the school’s history, only exceeded by boys track. If the Trojans win in March, the team will have won 13 titles

Bracknell said he is proud of his second-year debaters.“I am proud of their hard work and looking forward to watching them continue to grow in the program,” he said.
