There were 189 life sentenced inmates incarcerated at Johnson State Prison in Johnson County in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Douglas Jerome Salter was the oldest at approximately 85-years-old.

Alexander Lee Tredway, roughly 19-year-old men, were the youngest men sentenced to serve life in prison.

Georgia imprisons a higher percentage of its population than any other democracy in the world, locking up 968 per 100,000 people.

State spends between $25,000 and $30,000 on average annually on incarcerated individuals.

Georgia’s crime rate increased in recent years, leading to higher incarceration numbers and more taxpayer money spent on prisoners. Accusations of mistreatment of inmates, riots, deadly assaults on inmates, attacks on correctional officers, and concerns about the poor physical condition of the facilities are a continual problem in Georgia.
