A fascination with computers drove Parker Fountain to consider a career in the cyber field. And after researching job opportunities in cybersecurity, the expected growth was enticing.
“Cybersecurity not only suits my characteristics but has job security tied to it,” Fountain shared. “Whether it be on a small or large-scale – doing office maintenance or monitoring network traffic – it has job-security.”
After learning about Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) through a college fair at his high school, he looked into their cyber programs.
“The representatives at OFTC seemed to care about my interests and attendance,” Fountain said. “They were always reaching out to me and tending to my questions and concerns.”
“I was weary of joining a post-secondary institution, but it was for nothing,” he added. “I was treated like I was wanted at OFTC.”
The OFTC Difference
After graduation, he enrolled in the cybersecurity program and has enjoyed the content of his classes and overall environment at the college.
“I enjoy the challenges and knowledge that comes with the cybersecurity field,” Fountain said. “I learn new skills and techniques every day.”
“And the hands-on learning opportunities go further than just your normal paperwork or team-building exercises,” he added. “They’ve given me a vision of what I’ll be doing when I graduate.”
His instructors have perhaps made the biggest impact on his experience. “The teachers go above the expectation of being a post-secondary instructor,” Fountain said. “They are effective and efficient in their teaching, and the advisors are always available to meet with you. The willingness of others to help students succeed has really stood out to me.”
After starting classes Fountain was surprised to learn about the many opportunities for student involvement in various clubs and organizations.
He joined the SkillsUSA Club and was a part of the Opening and Closing team who brought home gold medals in both the state and national competitions this year.
“SkillsUSA has taught me how to better myself as a person and as a potential worker,” Fountain said. “And I’ve also enjoyed the opportunities that have come with being a part of the college’s Rotaract Club.”
A Top Choice
With a few classes already under his belt, Fountain is confident he’s being prepared for a successful career. “I’ve been given so many opportunities to increase my knowledge in the cybersecurity field, and I know I’ll be able to find a job that best suits my cybersecurity abilities after graduation,” he said.
“I couldn’t have gotten this far without the help of OFTC,” he added. “OFTC is a go-to-choice for someone wanting to start or continue their post-secondary learning experiences. Even on a local scale, attending OFTC has been the best choice that I could have made.”
“I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience at OFTC,” he said. “For anyone looking to further their education, put OFTC at the top of your list.”
