GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR: Athens Sees Hike in January Unemployment Rate

Georgia Department of Labor issued the following announcement on Mar. 17. 

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Athens recorded an unemployment rate of 2.9 percent, up three-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 4.2 percent. Despite this, Athens saw a rise in the labor force and the number of employed in the month of January.

"Even though we continue to see Georgia's workforce be successfully employed in record-breaking numbers, there is still much more work to do as we continue to see hundreds of thousands of jobs needed to be filled,"said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force increased in Athens by 1,145 and ended the month with 103,371. That number is up 3,702 when compared to January of 2021.

Athens finished the month with 100,379 employed residents.  That number increased by 801 over the month and is up by 4,862 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Athens ended January with 99,800 jobs. That number decreased by 400 from December to January and increased by 6,500 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims were up by 11 percent in Athens in January. When compared to last January, claims were down by about 88 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 3,467 active job postings in Athens for January.
