Sixes Elementary School issued the following announcement on Jan. 27.
The Cherokee County School District will present its first districtwide elementary school math competition next week!
Designed by the Office of Curriculum & Instruction, the event’s goals are to encourage students’ interest in math, develop their problem-solving skills and inspire them to excel and have fun with mathematics.
“We’re dedicated to ensuring every child receives the best education possible in core subjects and skills like mathematics that provide a foundation for all other learning,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “Not only do we focus significant attention on providing thorough instruction, relevant applications and critical thinking activities in our math classes, but we also look for ways to engage students in math learning outside the classroom at all grade levels. This new competition, and the resulting formation of elementary school math clubs and competitive teams, shows our commitment to mathematics and continuous improvement.”
Teams from 13 elementary schools will compete in the inaugural event, which will include both individual and team challenges. Participation is optional, and participating schools formed after-school math clubs based on student interest and, if needed, held tryouts to select a competition team from the club’s membership.
Fourth-grade students and fifth-grade students will individually compete against students in their grade level by solving math problems on a whiteboard during a specific amount of time. During this one-hour individual challenge, students will attempt to solve as many problems correctly as possible, both to win an individual award and to contribute to their school’s overall score.
For the team challenge, teams of up to four students, with a maximum of two teams per school per grade, will be given 10 math problems to solve. Teams will have two minutes per problem to collaborate, problem solve and submit their solution. Their success will contribute points to their team’s and school’s overall score.
Trophies will be awarded to the top two individual winners for each grade level, with ribbons awarded to the members of the two top-scoring teams for each grade level. The two schools with the highest combined individual and team scores will win trophies.
Although there is not a next level of competition for the elementary teams, the event was designed to prepare students for math competitions available to older students including the annual middle school and high school math tournament co-sponsored by CCSD and Reinhardt University. While the event has not been held due to the pandemic, organizers look forward to hosting a 2022-23 event. The new elementary school event is the culmination of significant work by district curriculum and instruction staff including Dr. Catherine Head, curriculum coordinator for K-12 mathematics.
