COUNTY OF BALDWIN: Department of Agriculture Has Lifted Stop Order. Shelter Back to Normal Operations

Announcement

County of Baldwin issued the following announcement on Sept. 22.

Over the last two weeks of August, Baldwin County Animal Control had a large number, just under 70 animals, come into the building via cruelty cases and evictions. This type of strain on capacity in such a short time forces us to find ways to relieve space and to immediately decrease the number of animals in our care. We have reached our shelter capacity which means we cannot take in any animals other than those a threat to the public. In an effort to avoid the euthanasia of adoptable animals, this mandate has given rescue partners the time needed to adopt or rescue the animals in need. As a result, since August 16th, over 90 adoptable animals have left the building instead of being euthanized due to capacity constraints.

Public safety is still the top priority of any animal control department and it must be able to function as such. This means that dog bites and/or aggressive animals are assessed and approved by the Department of Agriculture on a case-by-case basis for the duration of the stop order.

The high instances of abandoned, neglected, abused and homeless animals in Baldwin County has been a constant battle for many years. But our partners in our community put the needs of animal welfare to the forefront. Together we make a difference.

Please remember that we are always here to help pet owners through education, spay/neuter assistance, food pantry support and finding alternative ways to keep pets safely in their homes. That being said, a large number of our stray and owner surrendered intake could be decreased by pet owners staying in compliance with local ordinances which require pets to be contained and tagged.

PLEASE, SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS.
