DUBLIN-LAURENS COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: DCS to follow CDC guidance, require masking indoors for vaccinated, unvaccinated

Dublin-Laurens County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on July 29.

After conversations and discussions with Dr. Thomas Craft, Director of the South Central Health District, principals, Local School Governance Teams, and the Board of Education, and following the updated guidance released by the CDC Tuesday, Dublin City Schools has made the difficult but necessary decision to require masking for all students and staff for the start of the 2021 school year.

Case volumes in Georgia have increased exponentially-from 1,509 cases the week of June 28 to 9,560 the week of July 27-figures similar to the peak of the pandemic last summer. Similarly, Laurens County has seen 182 new cases over the past two weeks.

“Once we received word that the CDC was urging a shift in masking policies, we began discussions with health officials, principals, our Local School Governance Teams, and Board of Education about shifting our policy to promote student and staff safety, health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Fred Williams, Superintendent. “By initiating this new masking procedure, we hope to ensure that in-person instruction will not be interrupted and case numbers within our school system can continue to remain low.”

Masking policies will be revisited every nine weeks.

Masks will not be required during any outdoor activities, but students will be expected to maintain a reasonable distance while outside.

Outdoor venues will be at full capacity for the first nine weeks, but masks will be required in order to attend.

“In person instruction is the best path to High Achievement and Success,” Williams said, “and our hope is by being proactive rather than reactive we can continue in that direction.”
