Dublin-Laurens County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on July 20.
By 8 p.m. Friday, July 16, all Treutlen County I-16 travel lanes flowed normally again after a State Route (SR) 86 overpass dump trailer crash, northeast of Soperton, shut down interstate travel for six miles the previous morning.
Contract crews, collaborating with the Georgia Department of Transportation, were able to remove the SR 86 bridge and safely reopened I-16 ahead of original timelines.
"My thanks goes out to the GDOT team members and contractors who worked through the night and day today to make this happen,” Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. said. “Our sincere gratitude goes to law enforcement, and I’d like thank those communities and individuals who have been impacted by this event for their patience and support."
SR 86 remains closed while Georgia DOT plans the bridge replacement. No work timeline is established. A signed detour is setup for the duration of the SR 86 closure and is as follows for thru-traffic and trucks.
