Georgia public schools enrolled more than 1.7 million students, as reported by the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 publication. Enrollment was greatest at the elementary level, with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 students (22.7%) in middle grades, and 539,092 students (31.4%) in high school.
Chronic absenteeism remains a significant challenge in Georgia following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, GaDOE rolled out statewide strategies including a real-time attendance dashboard, a public information campaign, and targeted district-level support to improve student attendance.
In 2025, state lawmakers updated school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion for absenteeism alone. Additional requirements for reporting and new pathways supporting alternative diploma completion are now in place.
By 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged about 14:1, an improvement over the national average of 15:1.
