Reports from the Georgia Department of Education show that Lewis Elementary School enrolled 10 multiracial students in the 2024-25 school year, marking an increase of 100% compared to the previous year.

Total enrollment at Lewis Elementary reached 254 students for the 2024-25 school year. Multiracial students accounted for 4% of the population, making them the school’s second-largest demographic group.

Lewis Elementary is part of the Hancock County School District, centrally administered in Sparta.

Within the Hancock County School District’s three schools, Lewis Elementary registered the highest number of multiracial students for 2024-25, with a total of 10 students.

Georgia’s public schools enrolled more than 1.7 million students, according to the Fiscal Year 2026-1 report from the Georgia Department of Education. The majority attended elementary schools (787,206 students, 45.9%), with middle schools enrolling 388,733 students (22.7%) and high schools at 539,092 (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism has remained a significant challenge for Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students being absent for 10% or more of the 2024 school year, per the Georgia Department of Education. In response, GaDOE introduced a range of countermeasures, such as a real-time attendance dashboard, awareness initiatives, and additional support targeting high-need districts to improve attendance.

During 2025, state legislators updated school attendance laws to prohibit expelling students solely for absenteeism. The law added reporting requirements and aimed to support students in attaining diplomas through alternative programs.

By 2026, Georgia averaged a student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, surpassing the national average, which was 15:1.
