The Wellness Center to begin offering free community yoga classes Sept. 6

September is National Yoga Awareness Month, and doctors at Atrium Health Navicent want you to know the benefits that yoga can have on your health. Atrium Health Navicent Wellness Center will also be offering yoga classes free to the community in September.

Yoga is an exercise which incorporates breathing techniques, movement and meditation, and can be beneficial for people of all ages and fitness levels.

“Research suggests that in addition to improving strength, balance and flexibility, yoga can ease back and arthritis pain and reduce stress and body inflammation to improve heart health,” said Dr. Sabry Gabriel, a family medicine physician practicing at Atrium Health Navicent Primary Care Internal and Family Medicine North Macon. “Before starting a new exercise program, always consult with your primary care provider to make sure it’s safe.”

Atrium Health Navicent Wellness Center will begin offering about a dozen yoga-inspired classes free to the community beginning on Sept. 6.

Classes offered during the kick-off include:

• Tuesday, Sept. 6: 8:30 a.m. Yoga, 11 a.m. Chair Yoga and 6:30 p.m. Restorative Yoga

• Wednesday, Sept. 7: 6:30 p.m. Vinyasa Yoga

• Thursday, Sept. 8: 9:30 a.m. Gentle Yoga and 11 a.m. Chair Yoga

• Friday, Sept. 9: 8:30 a.m. Yoga Flow to the music of Beyonce and 4:30 p.m. Restorative Yoga

• Saturday, Sept. 10: 10:30 a.m. Yoga Basics

• Sunday, Sept. 11: 4:30 p.m. Warm Flow Yoga

“The Wellness Center is a great place to start your yoga journey. Who wouldn’t want added balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, stress relief and improved mental health? We all want that and need that,” said Lisa Seneker, manager of health promotion services for Atrium Health Navicent. “Our classes focus on the postures, called asanas, and each class hosts a multitude of abilities. Our guiding words are to do what you can that day. With practice, you will begin to reap the benefits. After all, it’s called a yoga practice, not a yoga perfect.” To learn more about Atrium Health Navicent Wellness Center, or to sign up for a class, call 478-477-2300 or visit navicenthealth.org/wellnesscenter.
