Georgia Military College issued the following announcement on May 31.
To set foot on the campus of Georgia Military College is to walk among the ghosts of heroes:
On D-Day, June 6 1944, over 13,000 American paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions night-dropped into France amid heavy German fire. One of those men was LTC William “Billy” Turner. On D-Day Plus One, LTC Turner was killed in Vierville where he was instrumental in helping his men advance on the German stronghold. LTC William Turner was a member of the Georgia Military College Prep School Class of 1934.
Johnny Wheeler was born on August 23, 1940. On his 27th birthday in 1967, SPC Johnny Wheeler’s platoon was ambushed in the Quang Tin Province of Vietnam. The men hunkered down to avoid the heavy fire they were under. Johnny saw that the leader of his platoon had been hit, so he attempted to crawl under the enemy fire to pull him to safety. Johnny was hit, and he died in a jungle far from home on the same day he was born. He graduated from Georgia Military College in 1961.
On August 8 2013, Major David Gray video chatted with his wife Heather and their three children over a crystal-clear connection from Afghanistan. Heather told the Air Force News Service that the perfect quality on that call was rare. It was usually choppy. That was the last time they would ever speak to David. Later that day, in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, David was killed by a suicide bomber. David graduated from Georgia Military College in 1998.
Georgia Military College is supremely proud of the service of these men, and of all our 88 alumni who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country from World War I to the Global War on Terror. At GMC, we hold dear our duty to remember the fallen. So, today, please join me in saying to them, “We remember you and we will never forget.”
