More than 1.7 million students attended Georgia public schools based on the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 statistics. Chronic absenteeism continues to pose significant challenges for Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more instructional days in 2024, per Georgia Department of Education data. In an effort to address this, GaDOE has launched a statewide initiative that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, public awareness outreach, and targeted support for districts with higher needs to promote regular attendance.
In 2025, Georgia legislators approved an update to school attendance laws prohibiting schools from expelling students solely for absenteeism. The legislation introduced additional reporting and aligns with programs supporting alternative diploma pathways for students.
As of 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, which is more favorable compared to the national average of 15:1.
