Carrollton Junior High School issued the following announcement on Mar. 18.
The Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation recently announced the creation of a new scholarship in honor of Richard Mehaffey, a 1950 graduate of Carrollton High School, while also encouraging students who hope to work in a STEM-related field one day.
The Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation is offering a new scholarship for students interested in a STEM-related field in honor of Richard Mehaffey, a 1959 graduate of Carrollton High School.
Richard Mehaffey served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He then attended the Georgia Institute of Technology with assistance from the GI Bill and graduated in 1958. After college, he worked at Southwire in Carrollton for several years and later was the director of the solid waste management department with Carroll County. This scholarship honors the life and legacy of Mr. Mehaffey in the Carrollton community and supports students who aspire to become engineers or pursue a STEM-related field after college.
Mehaffey’s son, Dr. Phillip Mehaffey, said the scholarship is a way to honor his father and help support students to continue their education.
“Our father was very proud to have been essentially a lifelong resident of Carrollton and a graduate of CHS and Georgia Tech,” he said. “We wanted to honor him by establishing this scholarship fund to enable CHS graduates to pursue their educational goals.”
The 2022 scholarship winner will be announced next month at the foundation’s first scholarship awards breakfast which will be held April 19.
