Atrium Health Navicent issued the following announcement on May 16.

Atrium Health Navicent is raising awareness for trauma care this May by celebrating trauma survivors, holding educational events and community training, and hosting a blood drive.

Atrium Heath Navicent The Medical Center is central and south Georgia’s only adult Level I trauma center verified by the American College of Surgeons and one of only five adult Level I trauma centers in the state. Trauma Awareness Month is observed each May to provide education and raise awareness for the prevention of traumatic injuries.

Trauma Awareness Month events include:

• May 18 — A Trauma Survivors Day ceremony will celebrate trauma survivors and reunite a survivor with the first responders and medical care team who saved his life last year. Macon-Bibb County will also present a Trauma Awareness Month proclamation. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in front of the emergency center at Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center.

• May 19 — In observance of National Stop the Bleed Day, Atrium Health Navicent Trauma Services, The Georgia Trauma System and the Region 5 Regional Trauma Advisory Committee’s instructional team are hosting Stop the Bleed training. Stop the Bleed is a national campaign that seeks to save lives by educating and equipping bystanders to help in a bleeding emergency until emergency responders arrive. Uncontrolled bleeding injuries can result from natural or manmade disasters and accidents. Register at R5Trauma.org.

• Virtual 90-minute webinars will be held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

• Hands-on Skills Training drop-in sessions will begin at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Health Education Center, 877 Hemlock Street in Macon.

• May 19 — A blood drive will be held at Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. to help replenish much-needed donor blood supplies used by trauma patients and others during medical care. Schedule an appointment at www.RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-733-2767.

• May 16-19 — Atrium Health Navicent, the Region 5 Regional Trauma Advisory Committee and The Word Podcast are sponsoring daily continuing medical education podcasts featuring trauma topics. Register at R5Trauma.org.

“Atrium Health Navicent’s team of trauma physicians, nurses and other caregivers are dedicated to providing the very best care, close to home,” said Dr. Dennis Ashley, medical director of Trauma Services at Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center and chair of the Georgia Trauma Commission. “We hope that the community will take an opportunity this month to consider how they can prevent traumatic injury – whether it’s not drinking and driving, wearing a bicycle helmet, or taking some other protective action – participate in Stop the Bleed training and donate blood to save a life.”
